Zakir Husain was an Indian educationist and politician who served as the 3rd President of India from 1967 until his death in 1969. He was a key figure in the Indian independence movement and a prominent educationist before becoming President.
Husain was the founder of Jamia Millia Islamia, a central university in New Delhi, and served as its Vice Chancellor for several years. He also served as the Governor of Bihar from 1957 to 1962. He was a member of the Indian National Congress party and played a key role in the education and intellectual development of the nation.
As President, Husain played an important role in the consolidation of India's democratic institutions and in the country's development. He also played a significant role in the promotion of education and is credited with the establishment of several institutions of higher learning.
In recognition of his contributions to education and public service, Husain was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, in 1963. He died on May 3, 1969, while still in office.
