Giri served as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh and KarnATA state before becoming President. He was also a Member of Parliament and served as a Minister of Labour and Employment.
During his tenure as President, Giri played an important role in the consolidation of India's democratic institutions and in the country's development. He was known for his efforts to improve the lives of workers and farmers. He also played a significant role in the promotion of education and is credited with the establishment of several institutions of higher learning.
In recognition of his contributions to public service, Giri was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, in 1975. He died on June 24, 1980.
