Gujral was born in Jhelum, now in Pakistan, and moved to India during the Partition of India in 1947. He began his political career as a member of the Communist Party of India, but later joined the Janata Dal party. He served as a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India's parliament, from 1964 to 1976, and as a member of the Lok Sabha, the lower house, from 1977 to 1989. He held various cabinet portfolios during his career, including Communications, Information and Broadcasting and External Affairs before becoming Prime Minister.
Gujral is known for his "Gujral Doctrine" which emphasized on good relations with neighboring countries, which he believed was necessary for India's security and economic growth. He passed away on November 30, 2012.
