Indira Gandhi Biography ?

Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India for three consecutive terms from 1966 to 1977 and for a fourth term from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. She was the first and, to date, the only female Prime Minister of India.

She was born on November 19, 1917, in Allahabad, United Provinces, British India (now in Uttar Pradesh, India) and was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister. She was educated in India and abroad, including at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.

Gandhi began her political career in the Indian National Congress party, which her father led, and she eventually became a member of the party's Working Committee. She served as the President of the Indian National Congress from 1959 to 1960.

In 1966, Gandhi became the Prime Minister of India following the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri. During her first term, she implemented a number of progressive policies, including the nationalization of banks and the abolition of privy purses for princes.

In 1971, Gandhi led India to victory in the Indo-Pakistani War, which led to the creation of Bangladesh.

In 1977, Gandhi's Congress Party was defeated in the general elections and she was arrested and charged with corruption.

In 1980, Gandhi was re-elected as Prime Minister and she served until her assassination on October 31, 1984, by two of her own bodyguards.

She is widely regarded as one of the most powerful and charismatic leaders in Indian history, and her leadership and policies had a significant impact on India's domestic and foreign policy.
