Tendulkar was born on April 24, 1973, in Mumbai, India. He was introduced to cricket by his elder brother, and began playing the sport at a young age. He attended Sharadashram Vidyamandir School, where he began to make a name for himself as a prodigy. He was selected to play for the Mumbai cricket team as a teenager, and made his debut for the Indian national team in 1989, at the age of 16.
Tendulkar quickly established himself as one of the best batsmen in the world, with a combination of technical proficiency, mental discipline and his natural talent. He holds many records in the sport, including the most runs and centuries in both Test and One Day International cricket. He also played 200 test matches which is a record and most number of test centuries. He also the only player to score 100 international centuries, the first batsman to score a double century in a ODI match. He also hold record of most number of fifties in international cricket.
Tendulkar was also known for his outstanding fielding abilities, he also took many crucial catches for India on many occasions. He was often referred to as the "Little Master" and the "Master Blaster". He was captain of the Indian cricket team in 1996 and 2000-2002.
Tendulkar retired from cricket in 2013, after playing his 200th Test match. He was the first player to score more than 30,000 runs in international cricket, and holds the record for the most runs in both Test and One Day International cricket. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, in 2014 for his contributions to the sport of cricket.
Off the field, Tendulkar is known for being a private person and keeping a low profile. He is married to Anjali Tendulkar, a paediatrician and the couple have two children, Sara and Arjun.
