Sharma was born on April 30, 1987 in Bansod, Nagpur, Maharashtra, India. He began playing cricket at a young age and was eventually selected to play for the Indian Under-19 team. In 2007, he made his debut for the Indian national team in a One Day International (ODI) match against Ireland.
In the following years, Sharma established himself as a key player for India in limited-overs cricket, known for his aggressive and powerful batting style. He has represented India in over 200 ODIs and over 100 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), and is one of the most successful Indian batsmen in these formats.
In 2013, Sharma made his Test debut for India, and although he has not played as many Test matches as in ODIs and T20Is, he has shown a great ability in these formats as well. He has been captain of India in limited-overs since 2017 and has lead India to win the Asia Cup 2018 and ICC World Cup Qualifiers 2018 and India reached final of ICC World Cup in 2019.
In 2019, Sharma became the only player to score five centuries in a single edition of the Cricket World Cup and was named the tournament's leading run-scorer. He was also the leading run-scorer in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2016 and 2017, and has represented the Mumbai Indians in the league since 2011.
Sharma is the only player who has hit most number of centuries in T20I cricket, he also hold the record of most number of 150+ scores in ODIs and holds many more records.
Off the field, Sharma is known for being a private person and keeping a low profile. He is married to Ritika Sajdeh and the couple have a daughter named Samaira.
