Before becoming President, Prasad held various positions such as the President of the Indian National Congress, member of the Constituent Assembly and Minister of Food and Agriculture. He was a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel and other leaders of the Indian independence movement.
During his tenure as President, Prasad played an important role in the consolidation of India's democratic institutions, and in the country's development. He also played a significant role in the promotion of education, and is credited with the establishment of several institutions of higher learning such as the University Grants Commission.
Prasad was a respected leader and was highly regarded for his simplicity, integrity, and humility. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, in 1962. He died on February 28, 1963.
