Rao began his career as a lecturer at the Indian Institute of Science and later held positions at the Tata Iron and Steel Company and the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay. He was a professor at the Indian Institute of Science and later became the director of the National Aerospace Laboratories in Bangalore.
Rao's research focused on the mechanical behavior of materials and he made significant contributions to the field of materials science, particularly in the areas of high-temperature deformation and creep, and the development of new materials. He also served as a consultant to several industries and government agencies in India.
Rao was a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, the Indian National Science Academy and the Indian Academy of Sciences. He received many awards and honors for his contributions to the field of materials science. He passed away on 2021.
