Why is Prayagraj called Allahabad?

Prayagraj is called Allahabad because of its historical connection to the Mughal Empire. The Mughal emperor Akbar renamed the city from Prayag (the Hindu name for the sacred confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers) to "Illahabad" (which means "city of God" in Persian) in 1575. Over time, the spelling of the name changed from Illahabad to Allahabad.

The name Allahabad reflects the city's significance as a religious and cultural center, as well as its importance as a hub of political and administrative activity during the Mughal period. Today, Allahabad continues to be a major center of religious, cultural, and educational activity in northern India.
